Friends of the “Our Lady of Grace Hospital (OLGH)” Breman-Asikuma

The association Freunde des “Our Lady of Grace-Hospital” Breman Asikuma e.V. (Friends of the “Our Lady of Grace Hospital” Breman-Asikuma) was founded in 1971, when a German pediatrician went from the university clinic Münster/Germany to the OLGH in Ghana. The founding members were her colleagues from the pediatric clinic in Münster: medical doctors, psychologists and nurses. Later medical doctors from the Netherlands worked in the OLGH and joined the association. Also different benevolent and interested people joined the group. The chairperson today is an eye doctor, who worked in Ghana from 1992 to 1996. He also helped a Ghanian doctor to establish the eye clinic in OLGH. The association helps the hospital by sending medical equipment (e.g. ultrasound machine, monitor, anaesthesia machines, incubator and others) and by funding training of staff.

Premies Focus Group

Premies focus is a team of health workers and community volunteers whose aim is to ensure that babies born either prematurely or under-weight within rural under-resourced communities in Ghana, not only survive but have the best possible start to life. Premies Focus Group started from Our Lady of Grace Hospital, a rural community in the Central region of Ghana.

Vision

All babies born prematurely and under-weight in impoverished rural communities in Ghana will survive and achieve a healthy growth and development.

Mission

All babies, regardless of their life situations, deserve not only to survive and thrive, but have the best possible start to life. Babies born prematurely in rural impoverished communities in Ghana often do not have access to the best neonatal care. Teaching Hospitals which are located in urban do not have the full capacity to cater all these babies born all over the region. It is thus imperative that measures are put in place to manage these babies at the district level by affording them quality yet affordable neonatal hospital care, alongside implementing homecare initiatives and homebased followup visits to ensure these babies do well at home.

Values

Babies born prematurely in rural impoverished communities are the most delicate and vulnerable in society. They deserve enormous attention to ensure they have good health and well being.
Prematurity birth complications are the leading cause of death among children under five years according to World Health Organiazation. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing of all at all ages, it is imperative babies born premature be managed comprehensively and holistically.
Prematurity has diverse implications on the lives of the mothers and caregivers of these babies. It has emotional, social and financial implications which can adversely affect the community collectively. Helping families through the growth and development curve of their babies’ lives, benefits not only these families but the community in general.

Goal

Our prime goal is to reduce prematurity associated mortality among babies to almost zero.
It is our aim that babies born prematurely who require incubator services will have ready access to incubators at the district level, to ensure they survive and develop well.
We hope to increase awareness of prematurity and reduce the stigma associated with it.
We also hope to empower mother’s with babies born prematurely and teach them the fine mothercraft skills required for babies born prematurely to live.
Our goal is to establish Premies Foci Groups in all impoverished districts all over Ghana to spearhead our main goal of reducing prematurity associated mortalities to near zero.
